History

Dr. Cori Phinn, the founder of Coast Veterinary, was born and raised in Bonny Doon in Santa Cruz County. She graduated with Honors CSU Chico and obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary medicine degree from Ross University. After completing her education Dr. Cori Phinn started Coast Equine in 2009 as an equine specific ambulatory practice serving Santa Cruz County. She ran the business from her cell phone, keeping back stock in her garage and with a single Team Member, Tasha Hunt. The clientele grew and soon they had a large group of horse clients. These clients were soon requesting care for other members of their animal family. In 2014 they began providing care to dogs and cats in the house call setting in addition to the equine practice. In 2016, Dr. Phinn became frustrated with managing chronic back pain in horses with medications. She was able to see the dramatic improvement in these patients from acupuncture. She became certified in this modality and began offering it. Looking to continue the relationship centered around quality care that the clients were accustomed to in the field the idea of a brick-and-mortar location started.

Dr. Phinn and her family had become part of the Scotts Valley Community and wanted to make that the home base for the clinic. In 2019, the hospital was built in Scotts Valley, California. The building was an empty crossfit gym and was transformed to a modern and beautiful clinic built with a small loan from a bank and a lot of hope. A veterinary team was assembled based on previous work experiences and the hospital was staffed without a single job ad being placed. Dr. Erika Sullenberger joined the team and began offering integrated medicine and rehabilitation in the clinic under the name Nautilus Rehabilitation. It was the only veterinary clinic in the county to provide rehabilitation services. The hospital soon developed a reputation for quality care and service.

In 2020 the demand continued to grow and the clinic didn’t have enough room to accommodate that growth. COVID hit and the team pivoted to curbside care. Mt. Hermon Veterinary Clinic, two miles away was acquired after an abrupt need for the owner to retire. The facility was upgraded with a cosmetic remodel and new equipment.

The clinic now had more availability for clients and the veterinary team grew. We proudly added the areas best Veterinary Technicians, Assistants and Client Service Representatives. We are commonly complimented on our skilled team. They have a positive culture and therefore we have very little staff turnover.

We have been able to attract very talented doctors to our team. Our experienced doctors all demonstrate the clinics values of professionalism and compassion for their patients. They all practice the highest medical standard of veterinary care. Some of our doctors have special interests including dentistry, surgery, rehabilitation and acupuncture. Together the doctors function as a team. With any doctor at Coast you can be assured your beloved pet is in good hands!

The two sister clinic united under one roof in 2023 in a beautiful stand alone building in Scotts Valley. While the clinic has grown in size to a nine doctor practice the values remain the same, we provide our patients with excellent medical care. We offer care with compassion, integrity and service to both the patient and client.
